Ganglion cyst at my wrist how to treat it

Ganglion cyst is swelling at wrist joint. It is very common problem. Ganglion is present in young girls most of the time. But make no mistake it can happen at any age. Most of the time patient notice it when there is some pain and discomfort in the wrist. When patient visit me and I tell them that this pain is due to swelling in the wrist. Usually they are surprised.

Why I have ganglion cyst ?

It is common in young adults. Most common there is no specific cause. Some time putting pressure on the wrist can cause Ganglion. I have seen many people getting it after gym exercises or heavy weight lifting. It can appear after heavy work out and can disappear by its own.

What are the common problems after Ganglion cyst?

Ganglion cyst can cause heaviness in wrist. Sometimes Patient can feel pain during house hold work or even using computers. Moreover It can also cause a cosmetic issue. Good thing is that usually Ganglion cyst does not increase in size most of the times. More often than not size is less than a 2 cm marble.

What tests Dr can ask me to do ?

There is no need to do any X-rays or MRI. Most of the time it is clinical diagnosis.

What is best treatment for Ganglion cyst ?

Ganglion cyst usually disappears by its own. We usually prescribe NSAID for inflammation to subside. Ice fomentation and rest is useful . Wrist splint can be helpful.

Injection therapy

Ganglion can be treated by Injection. We can aspirate thick fluid from ganglion and inject Hyaluronic acid. It provide good relief in some cases. Triamcinolone injection can also be used.

Surgery to remove Ganglion?

If patient is not happy with pain and swelling than it can be removed surgically . It is a day care procedure. It is done under small anaesthesia and there is no pain.

Ganglion is common in young people.

It can be treated with Medicines, injection and surgery.
