When you have a knee injury you go for MRI to confirm the diagnosis. MRI report can show many things in the knee joint. Most common thing which create confusion is partial ACL ligament tear.
ACL is like a cable and it is made up of multiple small thin wires. So when there is injury some time it is not completely broken and few wires are still intact . it is called partial ACL tear.
In medical terms, ACL is made up of two bundles. AM bundle and PL bundles. So some time only one bundle is torn and then it is called a partial tear.
Some patient become confuse after reading this report. They believe since some of the ACL is still intact there is nn need of surgery. Well it is only half true.
If you are a young patient and you are involved in running, jumping and sports than a partial tear is just like a complete tear. A partial tear is not going to help you in heavy activities. in such cases, we can keep your ACL there and add a new ACL along with this. It is called ACL augmentation. This will give you very good results.
If you are above 50 years if age then you can be happy with partial tear. There is no need of new ACL surgery. If you have instability and loss of balance than in above 50 years also surgery can be done.
